Deleting your account and data

Folio is built so that your writing belongs to you, and that has to include the right to take it all back. Deleting your account removes everything immediately — there is no grace period, no thirty-day countdown, and no copy kept anywhere on our side.
1. Deleting your account from inside the app
This is the fastest route and the one we recommend.
Open Folio → Settings → Account → Delete Account.
You will see a warning describing exactly what is about to be removed. You are then asked to sign in again — Firebase requires a recent sign-in before it will delete an account, which stops someone who picks up an unlocked phone from wiping your data. After you confirm, the app deletes, in this order:
- Your cloud data. Your account profile, your private memos, and your contacts, together with any shared memos, routes, and contact requests that you created.
- Your Google Drive backup. The
folio-backup.jsonfile is deleted from your Drive — not merely forgotten by the app. - Your sign-in account itself.
- Everything on the device. Local storage and the on-device database are cleared, and the app reloads to the sign-in screen.
Deletion needs an internet connection. If any step fails, the process stops there rather than continuing, and nothing after that point is touched — simply run it again and it picks up where it left off.
2. What is not deleted, and why
Two things survive, and both for the same reason: they are not solely yours to delete.
- A memo someone else sent you, or a route someone else started. Your copy goes. The original belongs to the person who created it and stays in their account.
- Anything you already sent to other people. Once a memo has reached its recipient it is theirs, in the same way a sent email is. Deleting your account does not reach into their device.
Backup or export files you saved yourself — to your own computer, or to Drive by hand — are outside the app's reach. Delete those wherever you put them.
3. Deleting data without deleting your account
You do not have to close your account to remove things.
- Individual entries, plans, people and documents. Deleting one moves it to Settings → Recently Deleted, where it waits thirty days and can be recovered. Use Delete Forever there to remove it immediately instead of waiting.
- Your cloud backup. Settings → Cloud Backup lets you disconnect Google Drive and remove the backup file, leaving the app working normally on the device.
- A single memo or conversation. Delete it from the Memo screen.
4. If you have already uninstalled Folio
You cannot reach the in-app route without the app, so email us instead:

Write from the email address you signed in with, and say that you want your Folio account deleted. We will confirm and complete the deletion within thirty days, and usually far sooner. If you write from a different address we may ask you to prove the account is yours — otherwise anyone could delete anyone's account by email.
5. What is kept afterwards
Nothing. Folio operates no server that holds a copy of your writing, so there is no archive to purge and no retention period to wait out. Once the steps in section 1 complete, the data is gone from our side entirely.
Google may retain some records of its own for a short period as part of ordinary Firebase and Drive operation, under Google's policies rather than ours. That is outside our control and is described in our privacy policy.
6. Data that never left your device
If you never signed in, Folio has no account to delete — everything stayed on your phone the whole time. Uninstalling the app removes it.
